”By constant self-discipline and self- control, you can create greatness of character” – Grenville Kleise
Let’s get started…
I don’t know about you, but I just have an adverse reaction to the word “Discipline”. It seems so harsh and unyielding, crushing free spirit and creativity.
If you have that initial thought, please cast that reaction aside, as we dive into this months leadership theme on Discipline and Focus.
Discipline and Focus are key to:
- accomplishing a goal,
- learning something new,
- stepping up our game
- maintaining a happy and content lifestyle
It is great to be a creative butterfly, but it needs to be coupled with discipline and focus to get that creative butterfly launched and the focus to make it something more than a wonderful colorful idea.
Let’s be honest, it is HARD to bring discipline and focus to the forefront in order to manifest your desires. So many things come crashing into our well planned days, lives etc, and completely derail our very good intentions. So let’s explore discipline and focus.
Let’s first look at “Discipline”…
“the practice of training people to obey rules or code of behavior; using punishment to correct disobedience”
Nope not this one … how about
“A branch of knowledge, typically one studied in higher education”
Brilliant, let’s take a modified option 1 and combine with option 2.
Therefore discipline for this article is self control (without the punishment
🤗) and a good dose of knowledge.
Now that we are on the same sheet of music, how do we bring discipline into focus for our work?
Being in control of yourself, through a highly structured approach is one way, as is, building expertise in your field.
As an expert, we get really good in something and others take notice.
This can be great, but it also can be limiting if it is too narrow and you don’t expand your discipline to learn and provide additional context and value. This is where focus comes in.
“A center of activity, attraction or attention”
“point of concentration”
Either will work in this.
If you are staying disciplined and focused, ensuring your not getting side tracked, there is also a caution to not get overly narrow in your expertise and start losing sight of the bigger picture. By keeping balanced to the bigger picture, you will have more leverage and options.
However, the opposite can be true, if your discipline is too broad and your focus not clear, you will have the opposite result, lack of clarity and you won’t know a tree from a forest. It all becomes a bit muddled.
Balance is a great equalizer to get to the right discipline and focus to achieve the goals you want and in your life. Discipline can create the mental toughness to push through and focus can keep you relentless in the pursuit, however with balance you can evolve your path, while keeping your “Eye on the Prize”.
The practice of discipline and focus…
When I look at what I want to achieve in life, I also have to look at what I will need to cast off. Here are some practical tips to adding a bit of discipline and focus to the mix.
- Spend time not only understanding what your really good at but also, what you enjoy and what impact you want to make,
- Be real with yourself that it won’t be perfect and your going to be frustrated along the way
- Think about the trade offs your going to have to make to stay the course (discipline) and not get distracted (focus)
- Assess again, is this what you really really want?
- Remind yourself that you need to adjust as you learn and grow through your career and life
- Be compassionate to yourself and others
Create your roadmap to success with confidence. Add bumps, potholes, unplanned events and lots of “oh wows” in your journey as you will have “learning forward” moments. Commit to adding in a balance of discipline, to not get distracted, and focused to stay the course can be the difference between your success and your defeat.
The keys to your future are owned by you as is your journey.
Find your balance and Shine Brightly!
